ABOUT RALEIGH RADIOLOGY

The physicians of Raleigh Radiology bring you the most experienced radiology practice in the Triangle. We are known throughout North Carolina for our leadership in medical breakthroughs and technological advances, helping to set new community standards in patient care.

Our board-certified physicians offer you the region’s broadest range of subspecialties in radiology. We have long provided the full complement of radiology services to Rex Healthcare, the region’s premier hospital facility. Today our patients also have the advantage of outpatient centers conveniently located throughout Raleigh.

In 1950, Dr. Tom Worth, one of the founders of Raleigh Radiology Associates (RRA), began practicing at Rex Hospital. He was the first full-time radiologist to provide both diagnostic and therapeutic radiology services in Raleigh. Dr. Worth brought in associates to enhance services in oncologic radiology, nuclear medicine, and vascular radiology. In 1974, Raleigh Radiology Associates and Rex Hospital recruited Dr. Patrick Cavanaugh. Dr. Cavanaugh, then head of Radiation Oncology at Duke and internationally respected in his field, assumed responsibility at Rex. Dr. Cavanaugh, with his associates and Dr. Worth were instrumental in the creation of the Rex Cancer Center –the first outpatient cancer center in Wake County.

In the 1980’s, RRA became the first practice in Raleigh to use film screen mammography, greatly reducing the radiation dose to provide quality mammography. RRA continued to lead the way by becoming the first facility in Wake County to become accredited to perform and interpret ultrasound examinations. In 1985, RRA formed Raleigh Imaging Services (RIS) to provide outpatient radiology services and soon after opened the Raleigh Breast Center to offer women a private comfortable, environment. In October 2002, each satellite office of Raleigh Radiology Associates was incorporated into one brand to unite the practice. Raleigh Radiology Blue Ridge, Raleigh Radiology Breast Center, and Raleigh Radiology at Rex Hospital were united with the addition of a new office in north Raleigh–Raleigh Radiology Cedarhurst. The Cedarhurst office features the same high-quality service including MR with the added convenience of the north Raleigh address.

RRRA has continued to grow over the years, constantly providing newer and expanded professionalDoctor Ramquistradiologic services. All radiologists of RRA are board certified by the American Board of Radiology. The majority of our radiologists have considerable additional training in specialty fields, allowing them to utilize state-of-the-art equipment in all areas of their practice.

Interventional and vascular radiologists at Raleigh Radiology Associates use the newest equipment to perform many highly technical procedures. The capabilities of interventional radiology have remained at the cutting edge. For some time, Dr. Mark Knelson, Dr. Cynthia Payne, and Dr. Satish Mathan have had considerable experience in the performance of vertebroplasties and kyphoplasties. These procedures offer hope for selected patients with recent osteoporotic fractures of the spine. These interventional radiologists, along with Dr. Andy Weber, provide a wide variety of specialized diagnostic and therapeutic services, including port placement, Uterine Fibroid Embolizations and Radio-frequency Ablations. All interventional procedures are performed at Rex Hospital.

RRA, in conjuction with Rex Hospital, has been a leader in mammography. Dr. Julia Taber, fellowship Dr. Tabertrained in mammography, coordinates the many facets of producing high-quality fully digital mammography at the Raleigh Radiology Breast Center, Raleigh Radiology Blue Ridge, Raleigh Radiology Cedarhurst, and at the Rex Hospital Breast Care Center. Drs. Laura Thomas and Jennifer Van Vickle complement the Breast Imaging section including breast MRI. Breast biopsy procedures are also performed by Dr. Kent Davis and Dr. Gintaras Degesys.

Dr. HinnDr. Greg Hinn, a specialist in musculoskeletal radiology, has developed this area of radiology into a complete and well respected area of our practice. Drs. Tracey O’Connell, Gintaras Degesys, Steve Carter, and J.B Mitchell complement the MSK team, who provide expertise for weekend athletes as well as many area college and professional athletes.

With expanded MRI services at our outpatient facilities and Rex Hospital, neuroradiology expertise is handled by Drs. Kent Davis, Cynthia Payne, and Jay Alley.

In 2004, Dr. Davis was recognized for 9 years of leadership as President of RRA. Dr. Don Detweiler currently serves as President of RRA. Dr. Julia Taber is serving as Chief of Radiology at Rex Hospital with Dr. Jay Alley as Vice Chief. Dr. Davis currently serves as Medical Director of the Cedarhurst facility.

Drs. Gregory Bortoff and Laura Thomas serve as radiologist recruiters for RRA. Dr. Bortoff is also the head of the CT division at Rex . Andrew Moran serves as Chief of Nuclear Medicine at Rex and provides expertise in Nuclear Medicine, PET, and CT. Drs. Roth, Bortoff, Watson, Thomas, O’Connell, and Van Vickle provide additional expertise in abdominal imaging.

Raleigh Radiology moved its Blue Ridge Rd. facility in 2005, and added digital mammography and MRI services. The new location provides a spacious, modern and private experience for the outpatient seeking radiology expertise. In 2006, the Breast Center relocated to Barrett Drive and added digital mammography. This continues to offer women a private atmosphere for screening exams and bone density screening. In 2007, the Cedarhurst facility added the Triangle’s first high field 1.5T Open Bore MRI and upgraded other services such as digital mammography. This upgrade has allowed RRA to become the first fully digital mammography practice in our area.

Upcoming years will continue to bring advancements in outpatient imaging and patient access, including planned RRA sites in Cary, Wake Forest, Clayton, and Brier Creek.

Many dramatic changes have occurred in radiology since the years when Dr. Worth was the only radiologist at Rex. Raleigh Radiology will continue to incorporate advances and technology breakthroughs as they occur and will be a proud leader in this evolution of health care of Raleigh’s future.
