PACSPICTURE
ARCHIVE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM
Raleigh
Radiology is a pioneer in the use of sophisticated computer
images to diagnose illness. PACS allows
radiographic images of patients to be taken and then presented
and stored on computers rather than on conventional X-ray
film.
These
images are then available at all times and at many locations.
Studies are available for immediate review and will essentially
eliminate lost X-rays. This, coupled with 24-hour
in-house coverage by the doctors of Raleigh Radiology, greatly
improves the timeliness of radiological interpretation, which
results in better patient care. PACS also allows doctors to
consult with the radiologist while each is looking at the
same image, even if they are in different parts of the hospital.
These
systems have been in development for at least two decades;
however, only in the last few years have practical systems
emerged. This is due to the rapid improvement in computer
technology. Raleigh Radiology and Rex were the first in the
Triangle to fully integrate a PACS system into the care of
patients, making the Department of Radiology filmless. We are proud to be on the cutting edge of this technology
and know this new system will greatly improve physician access
to patient imaging studies.
PACS allows remote sites such as doctors' offices to be linked
to the system to allow real time access to patients' images.
Radiology studies can also be put on CD-ROM for easy access
to images by most computers.
