  MEET THE PHYSICIANS
 
Neil A. Ramquist, MD   Neil A. Ramquist, MD
Dr. Ramquist joined Raleigh Radiology more than 25 years ago as a diagnostic radiologist with expertise in body imaging and mammography. He served as chief of radiology at Rex Healthcare. A California native, he received both his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of California at Davis and then completed his residency in radiology at Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where he was chief resident. Dr. Ramquist is an avid golfer and rower. He and his wife reside in Raleigh.
     
Donald G. Detweiler, MD   Donald G. Detweiler, MD
The current president of Raleigh Radiology, Dr. Detweiler joined Raleigh Radiology in 1982 after completing a diagnostic radiology residency and fellowship training at the University of North Carolina. Dr. Detweiler is the Medical Director of Raleigh Radiology Blue Ridge as well as the Raleigh Radiology Breast Center and has served as the President of the Rex Healthcare medical staff. A graduate of Duke University, he received his medical degree from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He has special interest in digital mammography, computed tomography, and ultrasound. Dr. Detweiler is interested in sports and is an avid golfer. Originally from Illinois, Dr. Detweiler resides in Raleigh with his wife and two sons.
     
W. Kent Davis, MD   W. Kent Davis, MD
The former president of Raleigh Radiology for 9 years, Dr. Davis joined the practice in 1990 and also serves as the medical director of Raleigh Radiology Cedarhurst. Dr. Davis earned his medical degree from the University of North Carolina and his undergraduate degree at Duke University. After doing an internship in internal medicine, Dr. Davis completed his radiology residency as well as a neuroradiology fellowship at Duke University Medical Center. A member of the American Society of Neuroradiology, Dr. Davis provides expertise in head, neck, and spine imaging as well as angiography. Originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, he enjoys gardening and travel.
     
Andrew B. Weber, MD   Andrew B. Weber, MD
Former Chairman of the Department of Radiology at Rex Hospital from 1998 to 2003, Dr. Weber joined Raleigh Radiology in 1992. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and attended Temple University Medical School in Philadelphia. After completing a surgical internship at York Hospital in Pennsylvania, Dr. Weber served his residency at Duke University Medical Center, where he was chief resident in his final year. Dr. Weber is a diagnostic radiologist with expertise in vascular/interventional procedures as well as subspecialty interests in neuroradiology and magnetic resonance angiography. A Pennsylvania native, he is an ardent Duke basketball fan and enjoys skiing with his wife and three children.
     
Mark H. Knelson, MD   Mark H. Knelson, MD
Dr. Knelson joined Raleigh Radiology as medical director of interventional radiology in 1993. He earned both his medical and undergraduate degrees at the University of North Carolina and then completed a rotating internship and diagnostic radiology residency at Case Western Reserve University Hospitals of Cleveland, where he was chief resident. After completing a fellowship in vascular and interventional radiology, Dr. Knelson served as assistant professor of radiology at Duke University from 1991 to 1993. He is a member of the Society of Interventional Radiology and has been an invited speaker at national society meetings. His techniques in central venous access and in placement and care of various catheters primarily in cancer and dialysis patients are used nationwide. He has been actively involved in the growing field of percutaneous spine interventions including the treatment of spinal fractures with Kyphoplasty and Vertebroplasty. After the sudden loss of his loving wife Lisa, Mark enjoys spending time with his two sons honoring her love and altruism.
     
Julia K. Taber, MD   Julia K. Taber, MD
Dr. Taber is currently serving as the Chief of the Radiology Department at Rex Hospital. Dr. Taber came to Raleigh Radiology in 1993 from Duke University Medical Center, where she completed a diagnostic radiology residency as well as fellowship training in mammography and pediatric radiology. She graduated from Brown University before attending Duke University Medical School. She has subspecialty interests and expertise in pediatric radiology and mammography, including stereotactic, vacuum-assisted breast biopsy, and has spoken to the Raleigh community on the role of imaging in the early detection and management of breast cancer. Dr. Taber is a member of the Society of Breast Imaging and the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine. Originally from Naples, Florida, she resides in Raleigh with her husband and two children.
     
Gregory C. Hinn, MD   Gregory C. Hinn, MD
Dr. Hinn joined Raleigh Radiology in 1995 after completing a fellowship in diagnostic and interventional musculoskeletal radiology at the University of Virginia, where he was also a resident in radiology. After attending the University of North Carolina, he received his medical degree from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine. Dr. Hinn has special expertise in all aspects of musculoskeletal imaging, including sports medicine. In particular, he works closely with the North Carolina State University Athletic Department in caring for their athletes. He grew up in Wilmington, North Carolina. Dr. Hinn enjoys the beach and biking with his wife and children.
     
Gregory A. Bortoff, MD, PhD   Gregory A. Bortoff, MD, PhD
Medical director of CT in the Radiology Department at Rex Healthcare, Dr. Bortoff joined Raleigh Radiology in 1999 after completing a fellowship in abdominal imaging at Wake Forest University. Dr. Bortoff attended Cornell University, received his MD and PhD from State University of New York Health Science Center at Syracuse, and completed his radiology residency at Wake Forest University. He also practices general diagnostic radiology and provides expertise in abdominal imaging, including MRI, MRA, and ultrasound. He has been recognized for his research by the Radiological Society of North America and the American Roentgen Ray Society. A native of Syracuse, New York, Dr. Bortoff lives in Raleigh with his wife and their children.
     
Jerry L. Watson, MD   Jerry L. Watson, MD
Medical director of MRI and medical director of ultrasound, Dr. Watson has served as Vice Chief of the Department of Radiology at Rex Hospital. He joined Raleigh Radiology in 1999 after a fellowship in abdominal imaging at the University of North Carolina. He was an honors graduate of Johns Hopkins University; received his medical degree from the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical School; and completed his radiology residency at the University of North Carolina. Prior to his fellowship, he was chief of radiology at the 67th Combat Support Hospital in Germany. He practices general diagnostic radiology and provides expertise in cross-sectional imaging.
     
Cynthia S. Payne, MD   Cynthia S. Payne, MD
Dr. Payne is a native of North Carolina and former Chief of Radiology at Rex Hospital. She joined Raleigh Radiology in 2001 from Greater Baltimore Medical Center, where she was Director of Neuro-Interventional Radiology. Prior to this, she was Assistant Professor of Radiology at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Payne is Board Certified in both Radiology and Neurology. She graduated from the University of Toledo Medical School, and completed an internal medicine internship at Harvard. She completed fellowships in Molecular Neurogenetics, Interventional Radiology, and Neuroradiology at Duke. She concentrates her practice on the treatment of vertebral compression fractures with kyphoplasty, general Interventional Radiology, and diagnostic Neuroimaging. She is a faculty member of Kyphon Corporation, training other physicians in Kyphoplasty.
     
Tracey E. O'Connell, MD   Tracey E. O'Connell, MD
Dr. O'Connell joined Raleigh Radiology in July 2001. Prior to completing a Musculoskeletal fellowship at Duke, she received her medical degree at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill School of Medicine and completed her radiology residency at UNC, as well. Dr. O'Connell practices general diagnostic and musculoskeletal imaging. She resides in Durham with her husband and three children.
     
Jennifer S. Van Vickle, MD   Jennifer S. Van Vickle, MD
Dr. Van Vickle earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago and her medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine. After completing an internship in internal medicine, and residency in diagnostic radiology at Duke, Dr. Van Vickle earned her fellowship in abdominal imaging at Duke and completed additional training in breast imaging. She practiced diagnostic radiology in Atlanta for nine years before returning to North Carolina and joining Raleigh Radiology. Dr. Van Vickle provides expertise in mammography, digital mammography, ultrasound, MRI and emerging breast imaging modalities. Dr. Van Vickle is the medical director of ultrasound at Rex and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Radiology. A native of Missouri, she is happy to call herself a “Tar Heel” now. In her spare time she enjoys boating the North Carolina coast, stalking wild morels, spending time with her family and friends, and taking long walks in the woods with her loyal dachshunds.
     
Gintaras E. Degesys, MD   Gintaras E. Degesys, MD
Dr. Degesys joined Raleigh Radiology in July 2002, after serving as director of radiology at Person Memorial Hospital in Roxboro, North Carolina. Dr. Degesys received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and completed his internship and residency at Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Degesys also completed a two-year fellowship in interventional and abdominal imaging at Duke University Medical Center. He will provide expertise in the areas of CT, ultrasound, MRI, and breast imaging. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, he resides in Bahama, North Carolina, with his wife and four children. They are of Lithuanian heritage with strong ties to that Baltic country.
     
 

Laura O. Thomas, MD
A graduate of Princeton University, Dr. Thomas received her medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine. She did her internship at the University of North Carolina Hospitals, and her radiology residency at Duke, where she was Chief Resident. Her fellowship in Breast and Abdominal Imaging was also at Duke. Before joining Raleigh Radiology in July 2003, for seven years, she worked at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas, where she was in practice with Dallas Radiologists, PA. Board certified in diagnostic radiology, with fellowship training in Women's Imaging, Dr. Thomas's areas of expertise include mammography, breast biopsy, breast MR, PET, oncologic imaging, as well as abdominal and pelvic imaging. Dr. Thomas serves as the Medical Director of the Rex Breast Care Center. She practices at Raleigh Radiology's private offices as well as at Rex Hospital. Dr. Thomas is an avid fitness buff who enjoys swimming and running. She and her husband have two children.

     
 

John “Jay” G. Alley Jr, MD
Coming to Raleigh Radiology is a homecoming or sorts for "Jay" Alley, who worked with Raleigh Radiology during his residency. He'll also be among friends at Rex Hospital, where many of the Emergency Department staff were his contemporaries at the University of North Carolina. The Goldsboro native and Morehead Scholar graduated from UNC and completed the Post-Baccalaureate Premedical Program at Columbia University in New York. He returned to North Carolina, receiving his medical degree from the UNC School of Medicine. This was followed by a residency in diagnostic radiology at UNC Hospitals, where he served as Co-Chief Resident, and in addition he received his Neuroradiology fellowship, also at UNC. Dr. Alley serves as Vice Chief of the Department of Radiology at Rex Hospital.

     
 

Todd J. Roth, MD
Dr. Roth joined Raleigh Radiology in 2005 as a general radiologist with expertise in abdominal and pelvic MRI, CT and ultrasound. A native of Kansas, he grew up in Houston, Texas. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin and graduated from medical school at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio. He came to North Carolina for a residency and a fellowship in abdominal imaging at Wake Forest University’s Baptist Medical Center. In his spare time, Dr. Roth’s outdoor pursuits include fly-fishing, mountain biking and wind surfing.
He resides in Raleigh with his wife Lara and their daughter.

     
 

Steven R. Carter, MD
Dr Steven Carter joined Raleigh Radiology in 2005. At the Medical College of Virginia he received both a Master of Science degree in Anatomy and his MD degree with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. He comes to Raleigh Radiology from Emory University where he completed residency as Chief Resident and fellowship in the Division of Musculoskeletal Radiology.

Dr. Carter chose radiology as his specialty because of the depth and breadth of knowledge it encompasses in both medicine and high technology. For example, “networking and broadband advances have done wonders for disseminating radiological images, increasing the knowledge base of clinicians in a much faster way, so that we [radiologists] can have a much more primary impact on the patient.”

Dr. Carter works closely with the Carolina Hurricanes in caring for their professional athletes.

Dr. Carter and his wife, Nicole, reside in Raleigh with their children. Among his hobbies are golf and automotive restoration.

     
 

Satish Mathan, MD
Dr. Satish Mathan joined the group in 2005. Dr. Mathan practices diagnostic and interventional radiology. Joining Raleigh Radiology and working at Rex Hospital represents coming full circle for Dr. Mathan, who was born at Rex Hospital. At that time, his father was studying for his master’s degree at North Carolina State University. Dr. Mathan received his B.S. degree in microbiology from the University of California at Santa Barbara and a doctor of medicine degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin. He returned to the Tar Heel state for his residency at the University of North Carolina Hospitals. He served as chief resident and completed a fellowship in vascular and interventional radiology at UNC.

 “Now we have many diseases that we can treat with very minimally invasive procedures that require short hospital stays or none at all. So we can get people back to work, back to their families, back to life. It’s nice to apply that to help people,” Dr. Mathan observes.

Dr. Mathan and his family reside in Raleigh . Dr. Mathan’s interests include travel, golf and Carolina basketball.

     
 

Andrew Moran, MD
Dr. Andrew Moran joined Raleigh Radiology in July 2006. Dr. Moran practices diagnostic radiology with expertise in body imaging and nuclear radiology. He is currently serving as the Medical Director of Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT at Rex Hospital. He also serves as the current Radiation Safety Officer at Rex Hospital. Dr. Moran is a native of California, but was raised in Idaho. He received his undergraduate degree from Idaho State University in 1995. He attended the University of Utah School of Medicine where he received his MD degree in 1999. Dr. Moran came to Raleigh Radiology from Duke University Hospital where he completed his residency in diagnostic radiology and fellowships in both body imaging and nuclear radiology. He resides in Raleigh with his wife and two children.

     
 

Joshua B. Mitchell, MD
Dr. Joshua B. Mitchell, also known as J.B., joined Raleigh Radiology in July 2007. He specializes in musculoskeletal radiology. Dr. Mitchell attended the University of Virginia for his undergraduate degree and the University of Tennessee College of Medicine for his Doctorate in Medicine. He then located to the Medical University of South Carolina for his internship and residency in diagnostic radiology. Dr. Mitchell served as Radiology Chief Resident during his third and fourth year. He then completed his musculoskeletal fellowship training at the University of Florida. Dr. Mitchell enjoys fly-fishing, golfing, kayaking, mountain biking and snowboarding. Dr. Mitchell resides in Raleigh and enjoys spending time with his wife and children.
