As we celebrate all the benefits of exercise, we must also prepare for sports injuries. If you’ve suffered a sports injury, you know the pain or discomfort may linger and require medical imaging to diagnose the injury. At Raleigh Radiology, an Open Bore MRI is one of the most common types of imaging to diagnose a sports injury. An Open Bore MRI uses radio waves and an extremely strong magnet to create images of the inside of the body. The most common types of Open Bore MRI exams for sports medicine are for the knee, elbow, shoulder and ankle.
Open MRI at Raleigh Radiology
An MRI machine looks like a circle on its side. The table moves the patient into the opening of the circle, also known as the bore. An Open Bore MRI, commonly referred to as an Open MRI, has a larger bore and a more open design. This open design is almost 20% larger than traditional MRI scanners and most exams can be done feet first so your head does not have to be inside the machine. The Open Bore MRI design available at all Raleigh Radiology locations can make larger or claustrophobic patients more comfortable during their exam—without sacrificing quality.
Benefits of Open Bore MRI
- No radiation
- Considered very safe for virtually all patients (except those with certain implanted metal devices)
- Most patients can go through feet first rather than head first
- Generous head room (about 1 foot)
- Reduced noise
- Illuminated bore
- More elbow room
- For most exams, the patient may also wear headphones with XM radio
