Hemorrhoid Artery Embolization

A Minimally Invasive Procedure for Internal Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoid Artery Embolization (HAE) is an innovative, minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure for treatment of internal hemorrhoids. HAE is an effective option for patients experiencing persistent bleeding symptoms despite conservative treatments, and for patients who wish to avoid surgery or are not surgical candidates.

Our interventional radiologists will review your health history and symptoms to determine if HAE is the best treatment for you during a consultation at our Midtown office.

Frequently Asked HAE Questions

Who is an ideal candidate?

HAE is ideal for patients with symptomatic internal hemorrhoids with bleeding who have not responded to conservative treatments, or for those who wish to avoid surgery or are not surgical candidates.

What is the recovery process and timeline?

The procedure takes about 60-90 minutes and patients go home the same day, with faster return to normal activities compared to traditional surgery.

Do I need a referral for a consultation?

To schedule a consultation at our Midtown office, an order from a referring provider is required. Don’t have a referring provider? Our team is here to help connect you with one.

What is a hemorrhoid artery embolization procedure?

Hemorrhoid Artery Embolization (HAE) is a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment for hemorrhoids. It’s performed as an outpatient procedure, so you can go home the same day without a hospital stay.

During the procedure, an Interventional Radiologist inserts a very thin, tube-like catheter through a small incision in your wrist or upper thigh that will block blood flow to the hemorrhoids, helping them shrink and improve symptoms.

Is a hemorrhoid artery embolization covered by insurance?

Many insurance providers offer coverage for this procedure—check with your plan for details.
