Get to know Gregory Bortoff, MD, PhD

Dr. Greg Bortoff enjoys time spent with family, his children, and his parents as they age and time with old friends as he prepares for an upcoming high school reunion. Time and people stand out in his life, and that includes his work life as well. Greg is conscientious about spending the time each patient needs and personifies each interaction as if interacting with one of his own family. “I try to set aside what I’m doing when a referring physician calls because I need to be timely and conscientious, to listen to the concern, and then turn things around rather quickly.” He understands that the clinician wants to get a rapid turnaround to be able to give their patient an answer. While Greg and his wife still have high school-age children, he is curious about what the “empty nest” will be like. A quiet house will be a significant change, but family will always be a focus. After growing up in upstate NY, he’d prefer to find his winters during his passion for ski trips rather than outside his front door, which is why he enjoys North Carolina, especially the Triangle area. “The proximity to the mountains and beach, within a 2-hour drive in either direction, and the opportunities with colleges in the area, is what we enjoy,” he says. “We’ve had two children attend UNC-CH, then one each at App State and Charlotte.” Dr. Bortoff loves being close to RDU for the traveling he hopes to do to keep up with his family and passions. With his love for skiing and a son who lives in Denver, Greg looks forward to visiting often and passing along the “guy's ski weekend” tradition he had with friends to his sons and potentially future grandchildren. Dr. Bortoff also feels that Raleigh Radiology is one big family. Like a family, there are mutual likes and some natural differences; and like a family, Raleigh Radiology is growing. He says, “Growing is a challenge, but we are meeting the challenge well, and I like that we are growing.” While the atmosphere is not as close-knit as when there was a single site when he joined in 1999, he understands that growth benefits their patients, and patients are always the focus at Raleigh Radiology.
