CT Cardiac Calcium Scoring
This quick, non-invasive screening uses computerized tomography (CT) to detect calcified (hardened) plaque in your coronary arteries. Patients will receive a “risk score” that identifies if they are at a higher risk for developing heart disease. Soft plaque (atherosclerosis) may not be visible on this CT scan, so this tool is not an absolute to predict their risk for a heart attack. However, knowing their risk score may help motivate them to make essential lifestyle changes.
Who should consider a CT Cardiac Calcium Scoring?
- Women and men who are between the ages of 40 and 70 and have increased risk factors based on family history
- Current or former smokers
- Those with high cholesterol or blood pressure
- Those who are overweight or inactive
