Uterine Fibroid Embolization

Treating Fibroids with a Flip of a Wrist

Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a safe, effective, and minimally invasive treatment for women who suffer from the symptoms of uterine fibroids. At Raleigh Radiology, our interventional radiologists specialize in this procedure, helping women find relief and improve their quality of life—without the need for surgery or hysterectomy.

Our interventional radiologists will review your health history and symptoms to determine if UFE is the best treatment for you during a consultation at our Midtown office.

Frequently Asked UFE Questions

Learn more: Heavy periods and fibroids: is UFE right for you?

What is a uterine fibroid embolization procedure?

Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment for uterine fibroids—and it’s performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning you can go home the same day rather than staying overnight in the hospital.

During the procedure, you’ll be given medication to help you relax and stay comfortable. An Interventional Radiologist guides a thin tube through a blood vessel to block blood flow to the fibroids, helping them shrink and relieve symptoms.

What is the recovery process and timeline?

UFE is an outpatient procedure, allowing patients to go home the same day and return to normal activity in approximately one week.

Do I need a referral for a consultation?

To schedule a consultation at our Midtown office, an order from a referring provider is required. Don’t have a referring provider? Our team is here to help connect you with one.

Do any of the following symptoms apply to you?
  • Pelvic pain or pressure
  • Heavy, prolonged monthly periods or irregular periods
  • Fatigue due to anemia (low red blood cell count)
  • Urinary symptoms such as urgency and increased frequency
  • Constipation
  • Painful sexual intercourse
Is a uterine fibroid embolization covered by insurance?

Most insurance companies cover UFE as a treatment for symptomatic fibroids.
